Rolls-Royce, I know I will never be in the market for any of your overly-handmade, expensive-ass and bespoke land yachts with crazy premium hide interiors and whatnot. But what the hell kinda tachometer is this????
That has to be the most useless thing I’ve ever seen in a new car. Then again, I guess if you’re not driving yourself, or if it’s a throwback thing....I haz confuse.

Why do you need a tach if you’re not shifting yourself?

It’s not a tach. It’s literally a power meter, as it says. At idle, you have 100% power available to use. That needle will bounce around as you’re driving, and it’s a gauge for how much power you have on tap at any given moment.
It’s along the same lines as the 90's and early 00's analog MPG gauge...

It is a throwback of sorts, older Rolls Royces had them as well, IIRC. The power reserve gauge is a more opulent way to express how much power you have and are using. The Veyron has one as well, naturally.
Edit - not quite the same but similar:

That doesn’t look like a tach.

So that every single conversation in a Rolls will go like this, I imagine.
Owner: “Mmm, what time is it?”
Driver: “Mmm, half past 1, sir.”
O: “Mmm, I’m going to be late to my golf match with Sir Bennington. Is it possible for us to progress there at a higher rate?”
D:“Mmm, there is... 75% power available.”
O:“Mmm, use all of it.”
D:“Mmm.”
O:“Mmm.”

That 1 is the best part. 1,000 and 1.

It really is, like the British version of this:

Tachometer - an instrament to measure the revolutions per unit time of a rotating shaft.
Pictured; not a tachometer.
Also I love the power reserve gauge concept

How do they measure it? Do they actually have strain gauges to actually calculate the HP output? Is it wheel HP or crank HP? SO MANY QUESTIONS

Because a tachometer is just so vulgar.

I truly, madly, deeply hope that on Wraiths that gauge goes to 150%, in tribute to the original “adequate, plus fifty percent” quoted PowerPC the Turbo cars.
Or at least to 110% in tribute to Spinal Tap.
In fact, I have decided right now that when I win the lottery and buy my bespoke Roller, it will.

You “just noticed” something which most reviews and roadtests pointed out in 2003.

Power reserve gauge. I believe it’s supposed to be a throwback to their aircraft engine days. A sort of classier, more subtle version of Saab’s advertising style.

The thing is though: simply flooring a Roller will not get you to 0%.
And yes, that was from first-hand experience.
The question is this: as RR vehicles have governed top speed, can you ever see 0% on that?

It’s not a tachometer, it’s far more opulent than that and I love it.

Probably calculated from RPM and throttle position.
